Maintaining your lawn this summer

Make your lawn the envy of the neighbourhood this summer. It takes work, but it's not impossible, to keep your lawn lush and healthy during the hot season. It's simple to maintain and enjoy once you grasp the basics. Here's how you can have a beautiful lawn with only a few regular lawn care routines.

  • Seeding and repairing your lawn

Although spring and early autumn are the best times to seed and restore your lawn, you may still do it adequately in the summer if you're willing to water your lawn regularly.

Using patching supplies, you may fix ugly areas of dried-out, dead grass. Alternately, in cases where dogs are to blame for the bare spots, you may fix the harm using repair packs made especially for situations where dog urine has burnt the grass.

According to the unique climate and rainfall patterns in your area, different grass kinds also function differently. Make sure you select the appropriate type of grass for your climatic zone.

  • Mow your lawn once a week

During the spring and summer, mowing your lawn at least once a week is part of conventional lawn maintenance. You might need to alter and mow more or less regularly according to the environment and the weather.

It matters when you mow during the day. To keep your grass healthy, mow your lawn in the early evening. Additionally, make sure that each time you mow, you only remove around one-third of the grass' height.

  • Water your lawn in the morning

Having sufficient water is the next essential component for maintaining a healthy lawn. Unless fresh grass seeds are sprouting, you don't need to water your lawn every day. The recommended frequency of watering is two to three times per week.

Use a sprinkler that covers the entire grass to get the most out of your watering regimen. It's important to remember that watering in the middle of the day or at night might not yield the finest results. Plan your watering to take place between 6 and 10 AM in the morning.

  • Feed your lawn with fertiliser

If you want your grass to seem lush and green, you must also apply fertiliser to your usual lawn care regimen. Fertilising a lawn is an easy DIY project for homeowners. All you'll need is a lawn spreader and high-quality fertiliser that meets the requirements of the specific grass type you're using.

Spreaders come in two varieties: drop spreaders and broadcast spreaders. For smaller lawns, drop spreaders work best, while broadcast spreaders are preferable for bigger spaces.

  • Eliminate the weeds

It might be difficult for most homeowners to keep weeds out of their lawns. In order to prevent lawn weeds from outgrowing control, deep watering, fertilisation, and weekly mowing may be helpful.

In South Africa, dandelions are a typical perennial weed with a robust taproot and a rosette of serrated leaves. It has a hollow, solitary stalk with a single blossom that is a vibrant yellow. With post-emergence herbicide, young dandelion plants are simple to manage, but once established, their robust taproots make control more challenging. To get rid of them, spray the area with a herbicide containing dicamba, 2,4-D, or MCPA.
