Conquering the Hills: Running the challenging and scenic Hillcrest Marathon

The Hillcrest Marathon is an exciting and scenic race that gives participants the opportunity to challenge themselves and enjoy the breathtaking vistas of the Hillcrest neighbourhood. The Hillcrest Marathon takes place on the 12th of February 2023. It starts at 5 am at the corner Hospital/Old Main Rd Hillcrest and finishes at Hillcrest Villagers Club, 5 Crooked Lane.

Seeff Hillcrest & Kloof has put together a guide on what to expect when running the Hillcrest Marathon, including tips on training, information on the course, advice on how to prepare for the weather, and details on the support provided on the race day. 

  • In-depth training

The Hillcrest Marathon is a demanding race, and it's important to train properly in order to have a successful experience. This includes building up your mileage gradually, incorporating hills into your training, and doing speed work to improve your overall fitness. It's also important to practise your nutrition and hydration strategies during your training, so you know what works best for you on race day.

  • Challenging course

Whether you're an experienced runner or brand-new to the sport, the competition attracts runners from all over the world and has a full 42.2-kilometre marathon, a half 21.1-kilometre marathon, and a 10-kilometre race, providing options for competitors of all levels. It's important to pace yourself, as the hills can be challenging.

  • Dehydrating weather

The Hillcrest Marathon takes place in February when the weather is typically warm and humid with average temperatures reaching 28°C. High humidity and moderate temperatures during a marathon can cause dehydration and increased weariness in runners, which can impair performance. To lessen the effect of the weather on your performance, it is advised that you keep hydrated, dress appropriately, and pace yourself suitably.

  • Cheering support

The Hillcrest Marathon offers plenty of support along the course, including water stations and medical aid stations. There are also marshals along the course to guide you and offer directions. There will be a number of support vehicles on the course, including vehicles to provide first aid, mechanical assistance, and transport for runners who are unable to continue.

  • Post-race activities

Typically after the Hillcrest Marathon, you get the chance to participate in a post-race celebration or recovery activities such as stretching, refuelling with food and hydration, and checking results and awards. Medical aid stations may also be available for runners who need assistance. You can enjoy the post-race festivities, which include live music, food and drinks, and an awards ceremony. The post-race festivities are also a great opportunity to celebrate your accomplishment with fellow runners, family, and friends. 

Proper training, pacing yourself on the hilly course, preparing for the weather and taking advantage of the support provided on the course is key to having a successful experience. The Hillcrest Marathon serves as great preparation for the 96th Comrades Marathon which will mark the 48th down run, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, on June 11, 2023. This year's race slogan is "This is it! Ziyasha!".
